Vocal Range and Profile: Adam Levine

Vocal Range: E2 - D5 - E6
Vocal Type: Lyric Tenor (4 octaves)
Vocal Rating: C

Positives: An instantly identifiable voice. Incredibly fast transitions from Chest Voice to Head Voice (see Payphone). He can use his falsetto for extended amounts of time without fatigue, a notable feat for a male. (Extra comments, ideas?)

Negatives: His voice is very androgynous and can become nasal at points. His overuse of falsetto can become irritable to some. (Extra comments, ideas?)

Single Review: Kelly Clarkson - Tie It Up

As People Like Us continues it's (painfully) slow ascent of the pop charts, Miss Clarkson has wasted no time, throwing her hat, yet again, into the Country ring (Mr. Know It All Country Version, Don't You wanna Stay, and Don't Rush preceded it). But this is a much more dedicated effort from our multi-genre starlet.

So far, the Country world hasn't had any issues adopting the Pop Rock Queen. It made its debut at No.52 on Billboard's Country Songs, before any digital or radio release. It also is sitting nice and pretty in the Top 10 of iTunes Country charts. So a Country hit doesn't seem to far out of reach. Country smash might be a stretch, but a Top 20 hit is an almost guarantee. And thats great, considering what a great song it is.

It starts off in true Clarkson form, with some electric guitar chords setting the stage for her voice to kick in. She surprisingly shows off some lower register notes first, a dark land for a blatant Soprano. She then swells into the Church Bell led chorus, "Let's set the date / Let's Hire a band / Let's cut the cake / Tie up the cans" The blue grass influenced bridge soon follows, letting Kelly rip a power note before closing it out once more with the chorus.

This jam is pretty darn catchy, and pretty good. It's a much stronger Country effort than the cliche Don't Rush, and  not a "sure lets try it out," kind of thing that resulted in Mr. Know It All being sent to Country radio. It seems unlikely to achieve pop crossover success, since its pretty blatant country, but hey, if Taylor Swift could do it, why not Kelly?

Singing Impressions: Your Favorites Exposed

Nost people reading this blog are aspiring singers, and would love to sound like Beyonce, Whitney Houston (insert talented vocalists name here). So hopefully, this will help you find out how (and give you a good laugh or two)

To start us off, YouTube comedian NigaHiga put together a horrifically accurate post, showing how to sing like some of musics biggest names. While it leans heavily on rap artists, its still fairly useful.

This woman has mastered the art of being other artists. Seriously, her Christina Aguilera and Celine Dion should scare you a little bit.

So in addition to being a notable vocalist herself, she can also give some spot on acapella renditions of Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Justin Bieber. But her Alvin and the Chipmunks might be the star of the show.

Nailed them? Not really. Close? Yes. Some actors are thrown in as well, but thats okay.

Maya Rudolph is not just an actress, she is the daughter of Minnie Riperton. Yes, the Minnie Riperton. While she didn't show off any whistle notes here, she did nail Rihanna and Gwen Stefani with startling accuracy. If anyone could dig up her National Anthem rendition, that would be great.

Which impression gave you chills, and which one was... well lackluster? Comment below! (If you have any suggestions for future posts that would be much appreciated, I'm running a bit dry right now)

Single Review: Victoria Justice - Gold

File:F62586e8b410cc8adbe19341be266b4e.jpeg
The Nickelodeon starlet dropped her solo debut this week, with 'Gold.' The funky summer glazed track isn't performing too hot, not even pulling a position in the iTunes 200. But is that a fluke, or not?

'Gold' calls upon Katy Perry's summer smash "California Gurls" while also implementing the acoustic vibe from Demi Lovato's "Heart Attack," before finally segwaying into a standard pop breakdown. Overall, the production feels somewhat generic and strategic, essentially, Nickelodeon knew that Justice isn't as big of a star as her Co-worker Ariana Grande, so they needed this move to hopefully gurantee some mainstream success. So far, it isn't working.

Her vocals are pretty solid, but she seem coarse in parts of the song, namely im the end and when she cheekily exclaims, "I'm gold!" She throws in one little run and sustained note, but Ariana and Demi won't have to be holding their breaths, they're safe from any vocal acrobatics she has to show off.

Overall, it does seem to have Victoria's own vibe like she said, but a label not tied to Nickelodeon would have greatly benefited her. The lyrics are above average (even though the random inclusion of 'Im Gold!' is mind boggling), the production is average, and her vocals are average, or maybe slightly above, but it doesn't seem like 'Gold' is going to catch on anytime soon.

Pops Leading Ladies: Where Could They Be?

2013 was poised for the year of female led pop, but instead, male-led music has taken a surprise upper hand. Macklemore has led 2013 with 10 weeks atop the Hot 100 so far, Robin Thicke bullets to No.1 in the UK and England, and Justin Timberlake has become this years Adele. Even Pharrell has also made a surprise comeback, boasting two new Top 10's to his name. Where are our leading ladies? Where oh where could they be?

Adele: The woman who struck fear into the hearts of Top 40 wannabes has been pretty quiet this year, only coming in to swoop up more gold for her mantle at the Oscars and Golden Globes. But apparently, she is working on new material. According to The Mirror from April 22: “Adele is currently in a recording studio in London and it’s in lockdown mode for the next few weeks. Four tracks are finished in terms of writing and she’s now laying down preliminary vocals with backing music and singers. The rest of the record will be done in LA. The feel is very much Adele going back to her roots, with some modern jazz and a couple of classic old songs.” 24 poised for world dominance? Place your bets.

Beyoncé: Beyoncé is probably the most active on the list. After shutting down the Super Bowl in February, Beyoncé embarked on her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, which has been selling out stadiums left and right, and recently shut down baby rumors. As for some new material to follow up her 'flop' 4? Well we've gotten bits and pieces, but home girl has been pretty quiet about when we can get the iTunes quality versions. She reportedly told a fan in Norway that her album is dropping in November. We shall see.

Britney Spears: After some decent success with 2011's Femme Fatale (3 top 10's hits but no Platinum record), a multi million dollar deal with The X Factor, Britney has been fairly quiet. Sure Scream and Shout was a hit, but we haven't seen Britney's name in the Headlining credit. Will.I.Am is confirmed as the executive producer for her follow up LP, but she is also going to be taking a residency in Las Vegas later this year. Maybe Britney has some tricks up her sleeve.

Katy Perry: Katy has been hitting up the studio for months now for the much needed follow up to her 2010 release Teenage Dream. She has confirmed she is working with Sia, and even Adam Levine was spotted at the same recording studio, but Perry has been quiet about a future release date. Maybe this effort will finally be Grammy worthy.

Lady Gaga: Contrary to popular belief, Gaga did not move to live quietly with the bush people of Botswana. She is still working on ARTPOP, after canceling her commercially successful Born This Way Ball, and acting uncharacteristically quiet on social media. Though the album was apparently finished last summer, she is still spotted occasionally at recording studios, so god knows when the most anticipated album in history finally drops. She promised a Spring 2013 release but that date is long gone. The plan is for ARTPOP to also score it's own app that includes new music and such, but we would much rather see the actual thing then to hear about it. Hurry up child!!

With pops leading ladies taking a break, everyone else in the game has been struggling somewhat. P!nk has turned out to be the surprise juggernaut for girl-pop this year, as Try and JGMAR crash landed Top 10 positions across the globe. Rihanna has had fairly strong success with last years Diamonds, and Stay has been fairly successful across the board. But to say she's been a front runner this year would be a bit of an over statement.  So will the females come out and make a 3rd and 4th quarter return? Or is 2013 the year of the males?

Comment below and let your voice be heard!
